Job Summary
The Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3) is offering a full-time postdoctoral research position to support activities within a Horizon Europe project. The project focuses on developing innovative crop rotations as a nature-based solution to help agriculture adapt to climate change (www.transform-rotations.eu). Led by INRAE (France), it involves 18 partners from seven countries (Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Spain, and the United Kingdom). This research will be conducted within BC3’s research line 3 on Terrestrial Ecosystems, and in collaboration with research line 4 on Adaptation to Climate Change.
Job Description
The postdoctoral researcher will lead, together with Dr. Daniel Montoya and other project members, the development of agroecological models that simulate crop rotations in space and time under a scenario of climate change. The main goal of these models will be to reveal the mechanistic underpinning of the so-called ‘crop rotation effect’ – i.e. the positive effects of rotations on crop yield and its stability in the long run, and whether such effects are altered in a climate change context. Models will also be used to explore the trade-offs and synergies with other agricultural practices (e.g., pesticide use, chemical fertilization). The work aims to identify the key ecological factors influencing the adoption of crop rotation in agricultural systems.
Key responsibilities:
Model crop rotations in space and time: development, running, interpretation, visualization, etc
Analyse and visualize data
Contribute to research activities: Support various aspects of the project’s research endeavours.
Write manuscripts and disseminate results.
Help train and mentor other team members if necessary
Main requirements/skills:
Degree in Ecology, Theoretical Ecology, Physics or Mathematics
Academic excellence in Theoretical Ecology, evidenced by previous works including PhD or postdoctoral research
The applicant must have good interpersonal and communication skills, as well as excellent written and oral command of English is required
Strong analytical skills, good knowledge of statistics, and programming experience.
Ability to work collaboratively
