Job Summary
We are looking for a research assistant at the Fundacion Biofisica Bizkaia (Biofisika Institute) under the supervision of Dr. Marité Cárdenas in collaboration with the Materials Physics Center (CFM) and the University of the Basque Country (UPV) to work on Shear-Stress-Responsive Nanoparticle Platforms for Targeted Cardiovascular Therapy and Atherosclerosis Management.
Job Description
The IBF is a joint research centre of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). In partnership with Fundación Biofísica Bizkaia (FBB), the centre focuses on advancing knowledge about the physical and chemical processes underlying biology and disease. With the FBB accredited as a Basque Excellence Research Centre (BERC) by the Basque Government, the IBF and FBB partnership enjoys a strong national and international reputation, and provides outstanding shared facilities for advanced biophysical and structural biology approaches in a new research building in the main Leioa campus of the UPV/EHU.
The successful candidate will contribute to the development and characterization of polypeptide and polymer nanoparticles engineered to encapsulate cardiovascular drugs and respond to high shear stress environments characteristic of atherosclerotic plaques. The work will involve synthesis and formulation of nanoparticles, investigation of their rheological and structural properties under shear using small-angle scattering techniques, assessment of their drug solubilization and release profiles and the development of microfluidic and flow devices that mirror conditions in the atherosclerotic plaque. We offer a unique opportunity to work at the interface of nanotechnology, soft matter physics, engineering and biomedicine within an interdisciplinary research environment.
The ideal candidate will have a background in chemistry, physicsm, engineering or nanoscience. The contract period is 1st January 2026 to 31st December 2026. This position opens the possibility for the candidate to apply for the general and neutrionic specific PhD scholarships by the Basque Government to start in January 2027, after completion of this 1-year contract. One requirement for getting the PhD scholarships is that the candidate is registered as resident of the Basque Country prior to January 1st.
