Job Summary

We invite highly motivated candidates to apply for an immediately available Research Assistant position in the laboratory of Dr. Marité Cárdenas at the Basque Centre for Biophysics (IBF; www.biofisika.org) in Leioa, Spain. We offer a 3-year fixed term contract in the first instance with competitive salary.
The successful candidate will work in the area of neutron scattering and biocolloids. We use a range of biophysical techniques including various microscopies and surface senstitive techniques as support for neutron scattering experiments. We work with a range of recombinant proteins and need to produce them inhouse as well as make use of the lipids in the biomass.

The IBF is a joint research centre of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). In partnership with Fundación Biofísica Bizkaia (FBB), the centre focuses on advancing knowledge about the physical and chemical processes underlying biology and disease. With the FBB accredited as a Basque Excellence Research Centre (BERC) by the Basque Government, the IBF and FBB partnership enjoys a strong national and international reputation, and provides outstanding shared facilities for advanced biophysical and structural biology approaches in a new research building in the main Leioa campus of the UPV/EHU.

Offer and description of the project

Required background

We seek highly qualified applicants with Science degree with background Biochemistry and molecular biology with proficiency in English. The applicant could be a PhD holder as well.
• PCR and real-time PCR.
• Extraction of proteins and lipids.
• DNA and RNA from cell cultures, bacteria and tissues.
• Mutagenesis and cloning of plasmids; electrophoresis, Western blot.
• Cultures of eukaryotic cell lines and bacteria, transfection, electroporation and transformation, protein overexpression, ELISA assays.
• Chromatography: Purification of recombinant proteins with ÄKTA liquid chromatography system. Use of HPLC in general.
Also desired for ideal candidate:
• Microscopy: Fluorescence and confocal microscopy techniques in general.
• Lipids: Lipid extraction and manipulation, thin layer chromatography (TLC), Mass spectroscopy.
