BCBL - Basque Center on Cognition, Brain and Language

FUNDED POSTDOCTORAL POSITION – SIGNAL PROCESSING IN NEUROIMAGING GROUP

Research Field: Neurosciences
Sub Research Field:

Job Summary

The Basque Center on Cognition Brain and Language (BCBL) in San Sebastián (Basque Country, Spain) is offering a 2-year funded Post-Doctoral opportunity. The PhD student will work on a research project within the Signal Processing in Neuroimaging group. We are developing new biomedical and signal processing and neuroimaging techniques to study brain function, structure and physiology, mainly using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS).

Job Description

The selected candidate will work on the development of a neuroimaging platform using fNIRS or fMRI for the rapid computation (i.e., on-the-fly or in real-time) of cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) maps. The project will involve: i) implementing methods for real-time physiological signal processing (end-tidal CO2, cardiac pulse, respiration), ii) developing pipelines for real-time preprocessing of fMRI and fNIRS data, iii) computing cerebrovascular reactivity maps from the preprocessed physiological and neuroimaging data (fMRI or fNIRS) based on current methods already developed in the group; and iv) creating an interface for the visualization of QA reports and CVR maps. The ideal candidate would have excellent programming skills using Python and/or Matlab and proven experience in the preprocessing and analysis of fMRI and/or fNIRS data. Of particular interest to the research group is the latest evolution of fNIRS towards wearable and high-density systems, hence familiarity with instruments and methods for diffuse optical tomography (DOT) are considered a plus. Preference will be given to candidates with prior experience in real-time biomedical signal processing or neuroimaging applications (e.g., neurofeedback, brain-computer interfaces). In addition, the selected candidate will have the opportunity to develop original experiments under the supervision and guidance of the PIs, as well as participate in the supervision of undergraduate and doctoral students. The candidate must have excellent organization and communication skills to contribute towards the dissemination of the results at international scientific conferences (presentations/posters) and peer-reviewed journals.

BCBL operates in a state-of-the-art facility equipped with a 3T MRI scanner (Siemens Prisma), a 8 emitters x 12 detectors fNIRS system, and is in the process of acquiring an HD-DOT instrument.

PI and research group: The candidate will form part of the Signal Processing in Neuroimaging research group (https://www.bcbl.eu/en/research/research-groups/signal-processing-neuroimaging) led by Dr. César Caballero-Gaudes (c.caballero@bcbl.eu), who will be the main supervisor. In addition, the group has active collaborations on the topic of the project with other research groups of the BCBL and internationally.
