BC3 - Basque Centre for Climate Change

Postdoctoral research position: One Health Observatory Lighthouse in the Bay of Plentzia (HOBE)

Research Field: Environmental science
Sub Research Field:

Job Summary

The Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3) offers a full-time Postdoctoral Researcher Position within the project HOBE, project reference TED2021-132109B-C22 funded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and European Union “NextGenerationEU”/ PRTR, a 2 year research project co-coordinated by PiE Plentzia Marine Station, and BC3. The position will be located at the BC3 research group Health and Climate, within the Adaptation Lab research line.

Climate change and environmental contamination have become the biggest threats to human life and to the ecosystem, and both have cross-implications for political-socio-economic outcomes. HOBE aims at improving the understanding of the interconnections between climate change, environmental pollution, and impacts on human/animal/plant health in a typical coastal area, the Bay of Plentzia (Basque Coast), characterised by several socio-economic activities and strong seasonality in tourism.

Job Description

BC3 is looking for a postdoctoral researcher who can support the Principal Investigators in the scientific and communication tasks along its 2 years of project life.

The researcher will conduct a critical literature review of local studies in the Basque Coast to analyze the complex interlinkages between climate change, environmental pollution and marine coastal ecosystems, and related One Health interconnections at local scale. The studies will be mapped using an environmental health framework to identify causal chains of events leading to impacts on human/animal/plant health, with possible positive and/or negative feedback loops.

This analysis will support the understanding of the state of the art of local knowledge in the Basque Coast from a One Health perspective, while identifying main research gaps.

This will support the identification of key local agents and the setup of collaborative meetings for local knowledge integration and co-design of a Pilot One Health Observatory Lighthouse.

The researcher will be supported by a full-time research assistant in all tasks of the project.

The researcher will support the PI to achieve the scientific objectives of the project, to develop effective and efficient task management and to collaboratively work, publish and disseminate project findings.

Key responsibilities:

Carry out a critical literature review of studies in the Basque Coast relating impacts of climate change, environmental contamination and socio-economic activities under a One Health perspective, with research gap analysis.
Mapping of local studies to identify and categorize factors such as drivers, exposure pathways, vulnerabilities, etc.
Identify local stakeholders, competences/responsibilities and institutional context.
Conduct interviews for knowledge integration with local agents.
Conduct stakeholder workshops to co-design a pilot One Health Observatory Lighthouse.
Supporting the task on the integration of scientific disciplines between BC3 and PiE under a One Health perspective, to develop transdisciplinary analysis.
Day-to-day supervision of Research Assistant.
Contribute to support management tasks in the projects and dissemination (including project meetings, conferences, deliverables).
Publish high-impact, peer-reviewed research in international scientific journals.

Main requirements/skills:

PhD in social-, environmental-, or health sciences and demonstration of a track record of peer-reviewed publications as well as the ability to initiate and complete original research. Other degrees might also be evaluated.
Knowledge of the literature on environment, health and climate change, and methodologies related to knowledge integration.
Ability to coordinate teamwork and interact with a broad range of scientific and policy stakeholders, and conduct transdisciplinary work.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Excellent written and oral command of Spanish and English.

Desirable requirements/skills:

Knowledge of One Health, human health impacts.
Cognitive mapping.

Benefits

Interdisciplinary and inspiring work environment.
35-hour week work calendar.
30 days of vacation per year.
