The Basque Center on Cognition Brain and Language (BCBL) in San Sebastián (Basque Country, Spain) is offering a 4-year funded PhD opportunity. The position is not linked to a specific project; the PhD student will work on research projects with the Computational Neuroscience research group. Understanding the human brain is an incredible challenge. We use simulations with computational models to discover principles that reveal how the brain supports language, cognition, perception, and action. For example, in the domain of language, we use artificial neural networks that simulate the timecourse of human spoken language processing. Our models develop internal representations that resemble those found in the human brain, and provide new hypotheses about the computations that support language understanding. We use experiments with human participants to test hypotheses that emerge from simulations with computational models. By gradually making our models more biologically realistic, we will discover principles that can guide theories of typical development and processing, as well as theories of developmental disorders and impairments due to disease or injury.
Job description: The selected candidate will develop and run behavioral and neuroimaging experiments, analyze data, and disseminate the results in scientific conferences (presentations/posters) and peer-reviewed journals. She/he will take advantage of state-of-the-art neuroimaging tools (Magnetoencephalography combined with structural MRI) and 3D motion tracking devices to explore the impact of gestures on speech comprehension. The selected candidate will also have the opportunity to develop original experiments under the supervision and guidance of the PIs.
PI and research group: candidate will form part of the Computational Neuroscience research group (https://www.bcbl.eu/en/research/research-groups/computational-neuroscience) led by Prof. James Magnuson (j.magnuson@bcbl.eu), who will also be the main supervisor.
Salary: 16.640€ gross/year (year 1 and 2); 17.830€ gross/year 3; 22.290€ gross/year 4

APPLICATION PROCESS
Potential candidates are invited to take part in the MCIN-Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación; AEI Agencia Estatal de Investigación Call for PhD Students expected for December 2022. Before applying, interested candidates are strongly encouraged to contact the PI(s) of the corresponding project in order to express their interest, discuss their potential fit for the position, and request any clarifications about the position and/or the project. Note that each candidate can apply to only 1 (one) project. The BCBL admin team will support potential candidates within the application process once the MCIN-Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación; AEI Agencia Estatal de Investigación Call for PhD Students is open.
