Job Summary
The Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3) offers a part-time position on coordinating the Marine ES Modelling and Natural Capital Accounting activities in order to support Research Line (RL) 5 on Integrated Modelling of Coupled Human-Natural Systems.
The RL generates multidisciplinary scientific knowledge from human-nature interdependence to address complex sustainability problems through artificial intelligence (AI). The goal of the RL is to provide environmental data, models and understanding by retrieving, evaluating and integrating the existing information in order to support an effective policy-making where nature counts. Besides Ecosystem Services, the RL also tackles Natural Capital Accounting, Conservation Finance, Food Security, Marine Spatial Planning, and Renewable Energy.
Job Description
Job description: the position (ideally a post-doctoral scientist) will coordinate BC3 contribution to the Horizon Europe Programme (HORIZON-CL6-2021-BIODIV-01-03) project MARBEFES (MARine Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning leading to Ecosystem Services) (GA: 101060937) starting on the 1st of September 2022. The overall aim of MARBEFES is to determine the links between biodiversity, ecosystem functioning and the resulting ecosystem services and societal goods and benefits and to achieve ecological and socio-economic valuation through a validated set of innovative tools in a distributed toolbox to enhance policy and governance for the marine environment to secure its benefits for current and future generations.
The scientist will contribute to the ARtificial Intelligence for Environment & Sustainability (ARIES) platform (https://aries.integratedmodelling.org/), a semantic web infrastructure that uses AI to build computational solutions to environmental, policy and sustainability problems. The position’s duties will include (1) coordination on the development of a Marine Spatial Planning ARIES application (aka ARIES for MSP) and (2) interfacing MARBEFES project partners and other stakeholders around the world to apply ARIES for MSP in developing national SEEA accounts.
